“No Day Without a Line” Artistas de Art Student League de Nueva York en España
“No Day Without a Line” is the motto of the Art Students League of New York. This exhibit demonstrates the range and quality of the League’s current teachers and students. Founded in 1875, the League has been instrumental in shaping America’s legacy in the fine arts. Many renowned artists have trained and taught at the League and today’s students at the League share the same passions that those greats brought to their art. Prominent Artists who Have studied or taught at the League include Ai Weiwei, Alexander Calder, Thomas Eakins, Helen Frankenthaler, George Grosz, Donald Judd, Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas E. Otterness, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, James Rosenquist, Mark Rothko, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and Cy Twombly.
Ms. Stanner received an MFA from The City College of NY and a BA in English from Queens College. She currently works as a metal sculpture Technical Instructor at the Art Students League. She has curated exhibitions and exhibited widely in solo and group shows at such venues as the Kingston NY Outdoor Sculpture Biennial, Godwin-Ternbach Museum of Queens College, The Hammond Museum in North Salem, NY, The City College Biennials, Noho, Prince Street, and George Billis Galleries in Chelsea, the Rubinstein Gallery in the Lower East Side, and the Ottendorfer and Tompkins Square Libraries in the East Village, and many others.
Among other prizes, she received a cash award for artistic merit from the Salmagundi Club and a Merit Scholarship from the Art Students League, where, in 2012 she was selected through competition to create a public sculpture for Riverside Park, NYC through the Art Students League and NYC Parks Department Model to Monument program. In 2014, she received a Career Achievement Award from the City College of NY Alumni Association. She is President of Sculptors Alliance, Inc., a not-for profit art organization; in 2015 and 2016 she curated their sculpture exhibits on Governors Island, NYC, and for the past 6 years has organized free Creative Sculpture Workshops for the community.
In her own work, Ms. Stanner specializes in clay modeling of the human figure and welded metal sculpture that is semi abstract, especially geometric wave forms. Her large steel public sculpture Wave is permanently installed at Rockland Community College in Suffern, NY, and her steel Rockaway Wave is on view during the summer of 2017 at Rockaway Beach, NY, as part of the On the Rock outdoor sculpture exhibition.
Mr. Hodes was the chairman of the sculpture department at the Brooklyn Museum Art School from 1974 to 1980. He has taught at St. John’s University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Brooklyn College, Friends Seminary, and the University of North Carolina.
In March 1999, Mr. Hodes was honored to have been chosen by his colleagues at the Art Students League of New York to join other League instructors in a show of mentors and teachers who have made a crucial difference to their students. Nothing, in more than forty years of teaching, has made him prouder.
In explaining his approach, Barney Hodes says, “If the work is diverse, its basis is not. This is sculpture that comes from an understanding of what the body is, based upon what the body does—an approach that hit its high-water mark in Europe during the Baroque. It is also a tradition that centered around sculpting the nude life-size or larger.” The combination of life-size work and anatomical function was the basis of the New Brooklyn School (now the New York Academy of Art), founded by Mr. Hodes and painter Francis Cunningham over thirty years ago.
Mr. Martin has taught at the Graduate School of Art, Yale University; New York University; International School of Art, Italy; and Fort Rajgat, India. He has had many international exhibitions and has received numerous grants. He currently works as a Painting Technical Instructor at the Art Students League of New York.
Knox Martin has said, “In order to make a work of art, you must know what art is! Essentially true art is revelation—not the illustration of revelation. One must teach without ego. You must be able to point to it and do it at will. That is called the thing! We teach doing the thing. If you as a student truly reach without reservation, you will know the thing. When this is clear, true art is perceived. The false will fade away. What remains is that which is fresh, unique, Eternal Dada!” “Art is at its cutting edge out of a specific lineage – the creation of reality. The subject matter of what I do is Art.”

Mr. Poons’s lyrical color paintings were first exhibited at the Greene Gallery in 1962, where they left an immediate impression upon the artists, critics, and collectors who saw the show. He quickly became the most talked about of the new generation of artists of the sixties. During that period, his work was included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, where he was represented in the show Art of the United States: 1670–1966.
Born in Tokyo and raised in the United States, Mr. Poons attended the New England Conservatory of Music and the Boston Museum School. He taught painting at the Art Students League of New York from 1966 to 1970, and returned to teach at the Art Students League in 1997.
His paintings are in the collections of many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Tate Gallery in London. During the last thirty years, his work has been included in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions, including many contemporary exhibitions at major museums and galleries around the world. Mr. Poons is currently represented by Danese and by Loretta Howard Gallery, both in New York City.
Mr. Bastidas is an Ecuadorian/American artist. He received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and his MFA from Hunter College. His awards include a Robert Smithson Scholarship, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Pollock-Krasner Grant and a NJEA Grant, he currently presents a Painting Workshop at the Art Students League. He exhibits widely in the United Sates and is represented in the collection of numerous museums. He is represented by the Nohra Haime Gallery
Other solos exhibits include those at the Gyeongnam Museum of Art, Gallery KunstDoc, and Bonn Gallery. His digital artwork was represented by Gallery Boreas (Lenox, MA and Reykjavik, Iceland) and had been included in the DiVA shows (in Paris, Cologne and NY) and the AAF (NY). He is a member of the National Academy of Arts and Design and is represented in their collection among other collections public and private nationally and internationally. He represented the US in the Cuenca Biennial (Ecuador, 1999) and the Sharjah Biennial (UAE, 2001).
His preferred medium, oil painting, is used as a tool of complex research and creation. Using black and white exclusively, he imitates the effect of grisaille with a precision that leads to graphic illusions, frequently resembling black and white photographs. Bastidas achieves a meticulous level of detail in his paintings, produced only by these two colors and their nuances, without needing support from other palettes.
Ms. Demaray is an Associate Professor of Fine Art at Rutgers University,. She is a fine artist whose research area is the interface between the built and the natural environment. Working in sculpture, digital media and eco-art, she designs listening stations for birds that play human music, cultures lichen on the sides of skyscrapers in New York City, and manufactures alternative forms of housing for hermit crabs out of man-made materials. With the engineer Dr. Qingze Zou, she is currently creating the IndaPlant Project: An Act of Trans-Species Giving. This project entails building light-sensing robotic supports for houseplants. Professor Demaray is the recipient of the National Studio Award at the New York Museum of Modern Art/P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture. Her work has been exhibited at New York MOMA / P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, the New Museum (New York), DADAPost (Berlin, DE), the Lloyd Digital Lab (Amsterdam, NL), the Center d’Art Marnay Art Center (Marnay-sur-Seine, FR), and the M.H. deYoung Memorial Museum (San Francisco, CA).
Demaray received a BA in cognitive psychology at UC Berkeley, an MFA in Art Practice at UC Berkeley and studied art at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She is head of the sculpture concentration at Rutgers–Camden and is a work group advisor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She is on the board of the College Art Association’s New Media Caucus and is a member of the Leonardo Education and Art Forum. Ms. Sarmiento received an Ph.D in Fine Arts from Complutense University in Madrid; a Master’s degrees in Literature and Art from St. Johns University; and she is the Director of bi-Coa: Base Iberoamericana/ Community of Two Americas in New York. Bi-Coa promotes Iberoamerican culture and interrelation with other cultures through their project “Connecting Cultures.” She is a teaches at St. Johns University, as an artist her work is inspired by nature and a search for other dimensions using the effects of light, volume, design and characteristics of the media.

In 2012 she was appointed the official artist representing Ecuador in the Bicentennial of the Supreme Court of Spain and also in 2012 was awarded the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III and a Certificate of Special Recognition as a Member of Merit by the Carlos III Foundation in Madrid, Spain. In 2006 she was the first female artist chosen to represent Latin America in celebrating the 60th Anniversary of UNESCO in Valencia, Spain. She is also a member of the Junior Board of Queens Council of the Arts, the Art Students League and a member of the association ALDEEU, Spanish Professionals in America. Mr. Sierra was attracted to the visual arts at a young age, studying at the instituto de Bellas Artes de Medellin. He began studying sculpture at The Art Studens League Of New York, focusing on the human figure with instructors Leonid Lerman and Barney Hodes. His life-size sculptures achieve a classical aesthetic while also capturing the expression and beauty of ordinary, modern people. Mr. Sierra has participated in group exhibitions in NYC, and one of his pieces was acquired by The Art Students League for its permanent collection
Mr. Draper a portrait painter and former combat artist who depicted many of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful. After his military service, Draper started a family and moved from Washington to New York City, in a house that belonged to sculptor Daniel Chester French. The Metropolitan Museum of Art had a combat artists show, and there was one entitled, “Men At War,” in Washington, both of which helped Draper’s work to become known. Then in 1949, he obtained his Park Avenue studio in NYC, and began his portraiture career in earnest. For approximately fifty years, captains of industry, University deans, heads of state, luminaries and historical figures from many walks of life had their portraits painted in Draper’s Park Avenue studio – often completed in five days, 2 sittings a day. His commissioned works ranged from Richard M. Nixon, (1981), John Foster Dulles, the Shah of Iran (painted in 1967), James Michener (1979), Dr. Charles Mayo for the Mayo Clinic, Walter H. Annenberg, Mrs. Dorothy Chandler, Terence Cardinal Cooke, Henry Kaiser, and Dr. Richard E. Winter (1992).
Draper was the only artist to paint John F. Kennedy from life. In 1962, Draper flew to Palm Beach, FL, where Kennedy sat for a sketch, which Draper used as a reference for several other commissioned portraits of Kennedy, among them the Harvard University and the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution.
Throughout his career, Draper always painted landscapes due to his great interest in nature. He showed at Knoedler, the Graham Gallery, Portraits, Inc., the Far Gallery, The Findlay Galleries (New York, NY) and the Robert C. Vose Galleries (Boston, MA). His work has been included in shows at the National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), The National Academy of Design (New York, NY), The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, (Boston, MA) the Fogg Art Museum, (one of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA), the National Gallery, (London), Salon de la Marine (Paris) and in museums in Australia.
For many years, he enjoyed teaching at the Art Students League of New York. In 1999, Draper received a lifetime achievement award from the Portrait Society of America.
